You know the feeling.
An opportunity pops up, your brain short-circuits, and suddenly you’re in a mental Olympic table tennis match.
Hard no. Wait, lean in? No, definitely no. But maybe?
It’s like watching The Bear’s Carmy stare at a perfectly plated dish—knowing he should trust himself, but spiraling into what if it’s wrong? territory anyway. (Spoiler: Overthinking ruins everything.)
The Problem?
➡️Fear and excitement? Same nervous system.
➡️Fear and misalignment? Also the same nervous system.
So how do you actually know if your fear means hard no or lean in?
If you’re like the majority of folks, your inner compass ghosts you right when you need it most—leaving you stuck in analysis paralysis, second-guessing every move.
Let’s get into how to decode your fear—because it’s not about eliminating it, it’s about understanding what it’s telling you.
That Time I Ignored My Own Hard No (And Wished I Hadn’t)
A few years ago, I was invited to interview for a Chief of Staff role at one of the largest healthcare systems in the country.
Prestige. Influence. Impact.
But something felt off.
And yet—I threw my hat in the ring anyway.
Because what if I regret saying no? Because this would look amazing on my resume. Because people would kill for this opportunity.
With each round of interviews, my discomfort grew. I realized I was faking my motivation. My brain tugged at me: Why are you doing this?
But instead of listening, I bulldozed forward—focusing only on the upside. I rationalized. I convinced myself to keep going.
Until I unconsciously did what so many professionals do: I self-sabotaged my way out of the process.
Because deep down, I already knew. This was not my path.
Looking back, I can see it clearly:
✅ This was a hard no, not a lean in.
✅ My fear wasn’t just discomfort—it was misalignment.
✅ Had I listened sooner, I could have saved myself (and the company) a lot of time and stress.
And here’s the thing: This happened a couple of years before I decided I had gotten everything I could out of corporate professional jobs.
At the time, I wasn’t ready to admit it. But this was one of the moments that brought me closer to realizing: Staying in corporate wasn’t the safe bet I thought it was.
Ever been there? When your gut knew but you kept pushing forward anyway?
Yeah, same.
How to Decode Fear: Hard No vs. Lean In
Most people assume they just need more data to make the right decision. But here’s what is really happening:
Your brain isn’t struggling with logic. It’s struggling to interpret what your fear is actually saying.
So how do you separate fear that’s just keeping you in your comfort zone from fear that’s a legit red flag?
Try this the next time you’re stuck:
Step 1: Name the Fear
Where do you feel it in your body?
- Tight shoulders?
- Clenched jaw?
- Mind running 100 mph?
Your body will tell you—if you take a moment to listen.
Step 2: Unpack What the Fear Is Telling You
- Is this fear based on past stories? (Old patterns trying to keep you “safe” from perceived risk?)
- Or is this fear an open question? (A signal that you need more information, clarity, or resources?)
Many times, fear feels like a hard no, but when we unpack it, it turns out to be a lean in that requires support.
Step 3: Get Clear on Your Next Move
🛑 Hard No? If, after exploring, you realize this is pure misalignment—you can trust yourself to walk away.
🚀 Lean In? If the fear is just about staying comfortable, what support, information, or next step will help you move forward?
The Real Outcome: Either Way, You Move Forward
Stop a minute and consider this: Fear isn’t the decision-maker. It’s just data.
The key isn’t just asking, “Do I feel fear?”—it’s asking, “What is this fear actually telling me?”
Is it a warning sign? Or an invitation to grow?
Whether your fear is a hard no or a lean in, the goal is to take action—not stay stuck in decision limbo.
What If Your Fear Isn’t Lying To You—It’s Guiding You?
This is exactly how I help my clients make bold, aligned decisions without second-guessing themselves.
Because this is where so many professionals get stuck—not in the logistics, but in tuning into their own signals.
And once you start decoding fear the right way, you can finally start exploring your next step—not just thinking about it.
So let’s put this into practice.
Think about a decision you’re sitting with right now.
- Is your fear signaling a Hard No—a true red flag?
- Or is it nudging you to Lean In—but you’re hesitating because it’s unfamiliar?
If you’re feeling stuck, you don’t have to figure it out alone.
I help my clients map out their options, explore the unknown with structure, and build the confidence to make a decision that fits them.
