You’ve Bought Into The Title Trap

When did your job become about climbing the corporate ladder?

Ever find yourself in yet another meeting to debrief the last meeting, thinking, “Is this it? Have I made it?

In corporate life, titles feel like everything.

They’re tied to pay, power, and respect. They’re wired into what I call the corporate hive mind–my phrase for the corporate mindsets that convinces us, among other things, that our worth is tied to our title.

Everyone knows it. Everyone plays the game. You chase the next title because that’s how you know you’re “winning”.

I remember those days. As a consultant, I wouldn’t take a project unless the client’s title was at least a Senior Director. It was my version of chasing titles: the bigger title meant bigger impact.

But we all know the dark side of chasing titles: waking up exhausted every day, your mind spinning with 20 problems at once, looking for a creative solution while you worry about your 100+ unread emails. You skip workouts, miss get togethers, and run on fumes – just to keep up with it all.

What happens when you consider switching industries – or maybe – starting your own business? How often do you wake up from that dream, thinking, “I can’t start over now”?

That’s when you know you’ve bought into the belief that your job title equals your value.

But, what if you focused on solving problems? What if you focused on solving valuable problems that your clients can’t solve for themselves?

That’s what business creators – those bold, intrepid entrepreneurs who build business organically – do. They focus on creating value, not climbing the corporate title ladder.

It’s a different way of looking at your potential, right?

Tomorrow, I’ll share a quick, eye-opening exercise to help you escape the title trap–and rediscover the unique value you bring to the table. Trust me, you’ll want to see this.

Cheers,
